Beginning Your Feeding Therapy Journey: Finding Support When Mealtimes Have Become Hard

Please note: This blog is for educational and informational purposes only and does not replace medical advice, therapy advice, or care from your child’s healthcare team. If you have questions or concerns about your child’s health, feeding, or safety at mealtimes, please consult a qualified healthcare provider. For full details, please visit our Terms + Conditions.

When mealtimes are hard, it can be tough to even know what to do first. If you’re feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or curious if something like feeding therapy could even help—you’re in the right place and you’re right on time.

Many caregivers who find their way to NOSH have already been working so hard behind the scenes—planning around safe foods, packing separate meals, bracing for comments, and carrying quiet worry about mealtimes have become. If that’s you, we want you know that you’re not alone, what you’re noticing matters, and there’s room for you, your questions, and your feelings here at our table.

SMALL STEPS AT YOUR OWN PACE

At NOSH, we believe that small, simple steps can make a meaningful difference. Often, the first step is to simply notice what feels hardest during meals—for you, your child, and your family.

You might write down a few details about:

  • What happens before, during, and after meals and snacks

  • What foods are offered and how your child responds

  • Any patterns you see—big emotions, long meals, power struggles, or worry about how much or how little is eaten

These notes don’t have to be perfect. They’re a way of gathering what you already know. Over time, these small observations can bring clarity, a little more hope, and a better sense of what your child is communicating through their eating (or lack of eating).

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU REACH OUT

The next step is often giving yourself permission to reach out for support. That might mean visiting our website, sending us a message, or scheduling a Discovery Call to share more about what you’re seeing at your table.

Reaching out doesn’t you’re ready to say yes. It simply means you’re ready to learn more. It also means you no longer have to carry every question on your own. Your concerns are valid and they deserve to be heard with care.

During your Discovery Call, we listen for the heartbeat of your story—what’s been hard, what you’ve tried, and what you’re hoping might feel different. Together, we decide whether a comprehensive feeding evaluation with NOSH is the right next step or whether another path might serve your family better right now.

HOW NOSH HELPS YOU BEGIN

If we move forward together, our first goal is to understand the full picture. Eating touches developmental, emotional, medical, sensory, and social pieces. It’s not just the Pinterest-worthy food on the plate or the number of bites taken at every meal.

Our comprehensive evaluation usually includes:

  • A virtual caregiver consultation to review your intake forms, questions, and goals

  • An in-home observation using your child’s familiar foods, seating, and routines

  • A follow-up Caregiver Connection Session to share what we’ve learned and talk through next steps

Throughout this process, your insight as the expert on your child and your family is just as important as our feeding expertise. Together, we outline meaningful goals and create a thoughtfully tailored care plan that honors your child, your family, and your values—so the support you receive fits into your real life, not the other way around. We move at a pace that feels manageable, celebrating small, steady shifts rather than expecting overnight change.

THE FUTURE WE HOPE FOR AT YOUR TABLE

At NOSH, our goal is about more than helping your child eat more foods. We want to help create a mealtime environment where you whole family can connect and thrive together. The true magic happens when your child begins to approach mealtimes with curiosity instead of fear, when you feel confident rather than anxious about feeding your child, and when gathering around the table becomes a time of connection that your whole family looks forward to each day.

Beginning your feeding therapy journey can bring up relief, grief, hope, and everything in between. All those feelings have a place here. We’d be honored to walk alongside you—one small step at a time—as we work together to transform your mealtime struggles into the joyful family experiences they were always meant to be.

From The Feeding Table to your family table,
Courtney

Our hope is that this space helps you feel seen, heard, and supported. If you’re looking for care specifically with feeding and wondering if NOSH could help, we’d be honored to connect with you to explore whether we might be a good fit for you, your child, and your family. We currently serve infants, children, teens, and families in homes across greater Houston and virtually throughout select states where we’re licensed. We’re always open to exploring new areas when it’s the right fit for a family and for NOSH.
